UM-D Chat Documentation
UM-D Chat is a university specific instant messaging service that allows faculty, students, and staff to communicate, using fast direct communications. UM-D Chat allows you to engage in near real time chat, transfer files, and socialize with colleagues and fellow students. UM-D uses an industry standard XML protocol that is compatible with Google Talk and other XML systems.

The first step up using UM-D Chat is to download the software or configure the software for you platform.
Downloading Pidgin or Pandion
1. Open a web browser. ITS recommends Mozilla Firefox.
2. Type https://webapps.umd.umich.edu/itslabs/itsDownloads/windows.html in the URL field.
3. Click Pidgin or Pandion to begin download to the desktop.
4. The Login screen will appear.
5. Type in your uniqname.
6. Type in your Dearborn password.
7. Click OK.
8. The Opening Pidgin or Pandion Screen will appear.
9. Click Save File.
10. Pidgin or Pandion will be downloaded to your desktop.
Installing Pidgin
1. Double-click the executable file on your desktop.
2. The Installation screen will open. Click Next.
3. The License Agreement screen will appear. Click Next.
4. The Choose Components screen will appear. Make sure that adding shortcuts to the desktop and start menu is checked.
5. The system will automatically choose where to install the program. Click Install.
6. The Installation Completed screen will appear. Click Next.
7. The Finish screen will appear, which will allow you to launch Pidgin immediately by checking the box in the middle of the screen.
8. Or, you can simply Click Finish to close.
9. Your installation is now complete.
Setting up Pidgin
1. Start Pidgin by double-clicking the Pidgin icon on your desktop.
2. The Pidgin screen will open.
3. Click Accounts>Manage
4. The accounts screen will appear. Click Add.
5. The Add Account screen will appear. Select the Basics tab.
6. Select XMPP from the drop-down box.
7. Type your uniqname into the Screen name field.
8. The Domain is umd.umich.edu
9. The source name can be anything wish. If you use Pidgin on several different computers you can give each computer a different source ie school, home, or work.
10. Click the Advanced tab.
11. Set the connect server to jabber.umd.umich.edu
12. Click Save.
13. The login screen will appear.
14. Type the Dearborn password.
15. Click OK
16. Pidgin set-up is now complete and you are logged in.
17. In the future, you simply double-click on the Pidgin icon and the password screen will appear.
Adding Buddies to Pidgin
Now you must add Buddies or other Dearborn students that you wish to communicate with.
1. Click Buddies on the main menu.
2. Click Add Buddies
3. Type the Buddies email address - e.g. username@umd.umich.edu or username@gmail.com
4. Click Add.
Installing Pandion
1. Double-click on the Pandion executable icon on your desktop.
2. Installing screen will appear.
3. Click Next.
4. The License Agreement screen will appear.
5. Click I Agree.
6. The Choose Components screen will appear. All the boxes should be checked.
7. Click Next.
8. The Choose Installation Location screen will open. The system will automatically choose the installation location.
9. Click Install.
10. The Finish screen appear.
11. Click Finish.
Setting up Pandion
1. Double click on the Pandion icon on your desktop.
2. The Pandion screen will open.
3. Click Tools.
4. Click Settings
4. Click Connection.
5. Type in umd.umich.edu in the host field.
6. Click Connection Settings.
7. Type jabber.umd.umich.edu in the address field.
8. Click OK.
9. Click OK again on the Settings screen.
10.The Pandion set-up is now complete.
Adding Contacts to Pandion
1. Open Pandion.
2. Click Actions.
3. Click Add a Contact.
2.The Find or Add a Contact Screen will open.
3. Type the email address for the contact in the user name field e.g. username@umd.umich.edu or username@gmail.com.
4. Make sure that the network is Pandion (XMPP).
5. Click Next.
7. The Completing the Find or Add a Person screen will appear.
8. If you wish to add another conact, Click Add Another Person.
9. If you are done adding contacts, Click Finish.
