UMD Policies and Conditions
Policy and Conditions of Use of ITS Computing Environment Services
Authorized Use
As a condition of use of the University of Michigan - Dearborn Computing Environment facilities, the user agrees:
To respect the intended uses of the computer access accounts
For example, users shall use only their assigned access logins/accounts as authorized by ITS for the purposes specified by the requester. For student access, the purposes are to complete coursework, prepare reports and documents, and other tasks as specified by the instructor as a part of the course content. Note that all uses of the system must be in accordance with the basic usages defined by ITS.
To respect the privacy of other users
For example, users shall not intentionally seek information on, obtain copies of, or modify data files, programs or passwords belonging to other users of the system. ITS has the right to observe the user if misconduct is suspected.
To respect the integrity of the system
Users shall not intentionally develop and/or use programs, transactions, or processes which harass other users of the system. This includes harassment and offensive language through email. Users shall not attempt to infiltrate the systems and/or damage components thereof. Installation of programs on any Public Computer Lab machine by non ITS staff is expressly forbidden. Any modifications which may fall under this heading is strictly forbidden.
Violation of any of the above conditions is unethical and possibly criminal. Therefore, when management of ITS becomes aware of a possible violation of these conditions, an investigation will be initiated. During the investigation, suspension of any and all accounts may be warranted to prevent further possible unauthorized activity. In accordance with the established University policies, confirmation of unauthorized use may result in disciplinary review, expulsion from the University, termination of employment, and/or legal action.
Appropriate Action
ITS Computing Environment Services shall be used in a manner consistent with the instructional, research and administrative objectives of the University in general, and consistent with the specific objectives of the project or task for which such use was authorized in particular. All uses of the facilities inconsistent with these objectives, even if authorized, are considered to be inappropriate use, and may jeopardize further authorization.
Responsible Use
Users are urged and expected to use the facilities in a responsible and efficient manner consistent with the goals and objectives for which the access was authorized. All users are expected to refrain from engaging in deliberately wasteful practices. For example, printing large amounts of unnecessary listings, using computers for frivolous activities (i.e. games), or unnecessarily holding dial-up telephone lines for long periods of time. The pertinent consideration is the recognition that computing resources are finite. Users are expected to cooperate to the greatest extent possible in making these resources available to others.
