ITS provides students, faculty, and staff with a UM-Dearborn email account that can be accessed from anywhere using a standard web browser, the uniqname and Kerberos password. Two semesters after graduation, or if a student has not attended classes for at least two semesters, email will go inactive. An email notification will be sent prior to deactivation to allow students time to download any needed mail and/or to set email forwarding to a personal account. Alumni can pay $50 annually to the Accounts office to maintain their email account and access to labs and library services.
To download mail:
-Open Zimbra.
-Click on the Preferences tab and select Import/Export in the left-hand menu. The Import/Export window will appear in the right-hand frame.
-In the Export section select Account.
-Click on the box next to Advanced settings. Make sure only Mail is checked.
-Click Export.
-All mail data will be exported to a "Tar-GZipped" (.tgz) format which can be imported back into the system. Or, you can unzip the files with 7-zip (freeware). Once the file is unzipped you can import the messages into Outlook or Thunderbird.
Mail Address
Your offical UM-Dearborn mail address is (uniqname)@umd.umich.edu. This address is used by schools and departments to send you important information. You are responsible for reading official notifications that come to your mail account from the University. Even if you use another mail account, check this one regularly! You can forward University mail to a personal mail account. For instructions, check out forwarding your mail.
You can search for other UMD addresses using the online directory. You can also get address information for faculty, staff and students at the Ann Arbor and Flint campuses by using the University of Michigan Online Directory.
Mailbox Storage
UM-Dearborn provides extensive storage for your messages and attachments. In addition, new mail features are being implemented so that you can easily check the size of your mailbox and see the percentage remaining in your quota. But it is still important for you to regularly clear out unwanted messages.
Students – You can use up to 2 gigs for storing your mail and attachments. That will let you keep thousands of messages and documents.
Employees – You have 10 Gigs available for storing mail messages and large file attachments.
Empty Your Trash
Most of us delete many unwanted messages every day. In most applications, those are simply moved from your Inbox to your Trash folder, where they pile up until you “empty” the trash. If you don’t clear them out, they can accumulate until they fill your mailbox quota. Don’t use your Trash folder as a filing cabinet for messages you want to keep. In fact, many mail programs will automatically empty Trash folders, which might cause some unwanted results.
Email Activation for Newly Admitted Students
As a newly admitted student you can begin using the University's Zimbra email system. Zimbra can be used on the Internet, and offers lots of extra features and options including calendar and contacts.
In order to activate your Zimbra account, go to https://webapps.umd.umich.edu/emailconfig.
You will see the Kerberos login screen which requires you to enter your uniqname and Kerberos password. Your uniqname can be found on the back of your UMID card, and is included in the letter that ITS sends to all newly admitted students, along with your passwords. If you have forgotten your password, or need assistance, please contact the ITS Accounts office at 313-593-3274 or accounts(at)umd.umich.edu.
Once you login and authenticate, you will be directed to a page with instructions on how to activate your account. This page will allow you to fully activate and begin using your University of Michigan-Dearborn Zimbra email account. You can also forward your email to another account such as Gmail. Whether you use UM-Dearborn's Zimbra or another email account, it is important that you check your University messages regularly. Official information will be mailed to you from University offices, such as Admissions, Financial Aid, Office of the Registrar, and Student Accounts.
