File Sharing System
University of Michigan-Dearborn provides students, faculty, and staff with space on the campus file storage and management system. Your files can be accessed while on campus or from home. In fact, with an Internet connection and appropriate software on your computer (SSH or SFTP), you will be able to retrieve and store all your files from anywhere in the world.
There are a number of features:
- Each user is assigned a home directory, which includes a Public and Private folder.
- Files that you want to publish to the web must be placed in the Public folder.
Accessing your home directory:
Accessing your Home Directory from on Campus:
Your personal shared files are automatically mapped to your computer when you login. If they do not appear as connected on the My Computer screen, you can follow the directions below to try to access them directly through the Run command.
Click
at the bottom lefthand corner of your computer screen. If prompted for a login, use your uniqname and Dearborn Password.
Select Run.
The Run box will appear. Using your University uniqname, Type \\smbhome\uniqname\ in the Open: field. Click .
Your home file directory will appear on the screen. You can select your Private files or Public files. Public files is where you must upload your html pages for your personal web page. Click on the files you wish to open.

Accessing your Home Directory from Off Campus:
Open the SFTP or SSH Client software:
The SFTP or SSH screen will appear. Click Quick Connect.
The Connect to Remote Host screen will appear. Type login.umd.umich.edu in the Host Name field. Type your uniqname in the User Name field.

The Enter Password screen will appear. Type in your Kerberos Password. Click

The file directory for login will appear on the screen. You can now access your private files or your public files. To upload files for your personal web page, you must access the Public directory and upload the files to the HTML directory.
