Quicktime Streaming Server
UM-Dearborn uses the Quicktime streaming server to deliver live or prerecorded content in real time over the Internet. The QT streaming server fully supports the latest multimedia standards, include H.264, MPEG-4 and 3GPP. So your content runs on any standards-compliant media player as well as a variety of standards-compliant devices such as mobile phones and set-top-boxes.
Request a broadcaster account
The first step in using the QT streaming server is to request a username and password. To request access to the QT streaming server please email the ITS Helpdesk at helpdesk(at)umd.umich.edu
The QT Broadcaster is used to produce live broadcast events. QT Broadcaster supports H.264 live broadcasts, MPEG-4, 3GPP, standards-based delivery, and much more.

If you plan to embed your stream on a web page you will need to create a reference movie. A reference movie is a mov file which tells the client where the stream can be found. The MakeRefMovie utility is available from Apple and make creating reference movie very easy.
Configure the QT Broadcaster
The QT Broadcaster comes with a number of Presets for Audio, Video, and Network settings. To adjust and customize the setting click the Show Details button
Audio Tab
ITS Recommendations
- Compress: MPEG-4 Audio
- Rate: 44.1kHz
- Use: Stereo
- Size: 16 bit
Video Tab
On the Video tab select the proper video source, width, height, compressor, depth, quality, frames per second, key frame every, limit data rate to, and frame reordering.

- Width: 320
- Height: 240
- Compressor: H.264
- Depth: Color
- Frames per second: 15
- Key Frame every: 75
- Limit data rate to: 220
Network Tab
On the Network tab set the Transmission, Host Name, File, Username, Password, Buffer Delay, Broadcast over TCP, copyright information.

- Transmission: Automatic Unicast (Announce)
- Host Name: qtstream.umd.umich.edu
- File: <Whatever you want>
- Username: <Username helpdesk supplied>
- Password: <Username helpdesk supplied>
- Buffer Delay: 8
- Broadcast over TCP: Checked
Put the stream on the web
Once the broadcaster in configured create a reference movie which with the url supplied by QT Broadcaster and put it on your web page using the QT Plugin on Typo3.
