Standard Recommendations

ITS monitors changes in computer hardware as they become available to determine which configurations might work most effectively with campus systems such as Banner, and the ITS standard software image. We develop hardware recommendations that will meet the latest computing needs of the campus, and take advantage of cost savings available through University discounts.

ITS does not recommend a standard configuration for students at UMD, since there are such widely divergent requirements and applications. Students are eligible to purchase hardware and some software through University contracts, which offer educational discounts. For more information, see the web site for the UM Computer Showcase. You are also eligible for student discounts when purchasing directly from Apple Inc. or Dell Computers.

The Help Desk can assist you by recommending hardware configurations that best suit your needs. Our staff has evaluated many different components and PCs, and can recommend an affordable standard office configuration which will work best with campus systems. If you have special requirements, contact the Help Desk at (313) 593-4357 to discuss what equipment will best suit your needs. We will also provide you with recommendations for replacement parts and peripherals needed for your current machines. You can purchase the equipment directly from Procurement Services, the UM Computer Showcase, or another vendor of your choice. ITS will handle the purchasing process for UMD schools and departments for a nominal fee [5% for shipping, handling, and rebilling

ITS recommends Apple, HP, or Dell desktop and laptop computers for campus use. The University receives substantial educational discounts from both vendors. For more information, see the web sites for UM's Procurement Services Purchasing department and the UM Computer Showcase.

Electronic quotes for Apple Build-To-Order system are available via the web at http://store.apple.com. Go to the "Education Store" and select University of Michigan-Dearborn as your institution.

Electronic quotes for Dell Build-To-Order Systems are available via the web at http://www.dell.com. Go to "HIGHER EDUCATION" link and configure your system and SAVE it to an E-quote with MICHIGAN as the quote name.* To order on-line, use special order and include E-quote# and name in description, or fax your order to 734-998-6158 on your MStores requisition. Depending on your printing needs, ITS recommends different printers. In order to provide the most appropriate configuration for your use, please call or email us with the following information: (1) amount you are prepared to spend; (2) the main use of the printer (i.e., graphics-intensive photo quality, color, high speed, etc.); (3) the expected volume of usage; (4) whether the printer be used by more than one person.
