New Computer Accounts
All UM-Dearborn students, faculty, and staff are provided with access to a wide range of University computing resources. As a new student or employee, you will be assigned a University of Michigan uniqname. Your uniqname is your personal University of Michigan identifier, and is the basis for all login access. Along with your password(s), it authorizes – or “authenticates” – you to many University systems in Dearborn and Ann Arbor. It is also part of your email address (uniqname@umd.umich.edu).
Your uniqname is assigned a UMICH (kerberos) Password, which is used for gaining access to any systems at the University of Michigan which require authentication through the UM-Ann Arbor servers. This includes access to the Multi-Media lab in the Mardigian Library, the language lab in the CAS&L Building, Home Directory access and on-line courses using the CTools database. Your uniqname is also used for authentication when you wish to update your directory entry in the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor's On-Line Directory (UMOD).
STUDENTS
New Students – never had a uniqname through the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Flint, or Dearborn campuses)
- Your uniqname and passwords are automatically created after you have been admitted as a student.
- Information will be mailed to your home address on record with the University shortly after admission. In addition to your uniqname and password information, you will be provided with documentation for changing passwords, using your email account, and on University policies and guidelines. You are responsible for understanding and complying with them.
- You can begin to use your email and computer lab accounts once you have received your information by mail.
- If you have not received your account information by the start of classes, please contact the ITS Accounts Office.
Returning Students – Sudents who were previously enrolled at University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Flint, or Dearborn campuses) will continue to use their existing uniqname, and will not be issued a new one.
- If your uniqname is no longer active, it will be automatically reactivated and a new Dearborn Password will be assigned and sent via US mail to the home address listed with the University. It is important returning students insure their home address has been updated.
- UMICH (kerberos) passwords will not be reset. If you do not remember your UMICH (kerberos) password, contact the ITS Accounts Office.
Alumni – Students who have graduated from University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Flint, or Dearborn campuses)
- Alumni may request access to the UM-Dearborn ITS computer labs, wireless and email for an annual fee of $100.
- If you have any questions or have forgotten your uniqname or password, contact the Accounts Office.
EMPLOYEES
New Employees (Full time/Non-student temporary) – A uniqname and password(s) can be created once you have been hired and have a UMID number.
- You will need to visit the ITS Accounts Office to complete the uniqname application and sign the compliance agreement.
- You will need to present your UM photo ID. If you do not yet have a photo ID, your authorized department representative must send a confirmation email to accounts@umd.umich.edu prior to your visit. The email must include your full name and UMID number.
- Your department must send an email to the ITS Helpdesk (helpdesk@umd.umich.edu) to authorize access to shared departmental files. The email must include your full name, your uniqname and your UMID number.
Student Employees – if you have a job on campus as a temporary employee:
- You will continue to use your current uniqname and Dearborn password
- Your department must send an email to the ITS Helpdesk (helpdesk@umd.umich.edu) to authorize access to shared departmental files. The email must include your full name, your uniqname, and your UMID number.
NOTE: Departments are required to notify the ITS Accounts Office whenever a staff person terminates their employment or transfers to another campus department so access to shared can be removed from the server.
