Passwords
Passwords at UM-Dearborn
At UM-Dearborn, you are issued multiple passwords, depending on the types of access requested. Passwords are required to prove (or “authenticate”) your access to many University computer systems. Password security is very important! Do not share your password with anyone. You can be held responsible for actions taken by someone else if they use your account to access University systems.
- Dearborn – This is the password used for accessing primary systems on the UM-Dearborn campus. You need your Dearborn password when logging into:
- Campus email
- Webmail
- ITS computer labs
- Wireless
- UMICH (Kerberos) – Your UMICH (kerberos) password is used to access many University systems that authenticate through UM-Ann Arbor's servers using Co-Sign.. You need your UMICH (kerberos) password when logging into:
- Wolverine Access
- CTools
- UM Marketplace (buy, sell, trade)
- Home directories/file storage
- Banner – employees who use the Banner student information system are issued a password for accessing data. NOTE: Banner passwords are issued by the ITS Student Information Systems team. Requests can be submitted to telstarreq@umd.umich.edu.
- Student Self Service through UMD Connect – students and faculty login to Dearborn’sUMD Connect site for applications, registration, payments, grades, scheduling, etc. You will need your UMID and PIN number.
NOTE: PIN numbers are obtained through the Registrar’s Office.
UMICH (Kerberos) and Dearborn passwords will not be changed or reset without University of Michigan identification. Users who wish to have passwords reset must come to the Computer Wing in person and provide valid University identification in the form of the UM picture ID Card. Students must be currently registered to have any passwords reset. All passwords can be changed in the ITS Accounts Office during normal business hours. Lab monitors in the Computer Wing and Library Labs are also able to assist with UMICH (Kerberos) passwords. Users can also complete the 24-Hour Password Change Request Form, have their ID verified on the form by an ITS Lab Monitor, and in most cases the password(s) will be changed the following business day.
PASSWORD SECURITY
In order to protect your accounts and the confidentiality you expect, it is vital that you keep your password secure from theft or misuse by others. Should someone else use or steal your password(s), they can masquerade as you and have access to your files, email, personal information and more. A stolen password gives others the power to modify or destroy your files, send electronic mail threats in your name, or subscribe to services in your name which you will be responsible for paying.
What should you do to protect your password?
- Select passwords which are very difficult to guess. Follow recommended Guidelines for Choosing a Password. The University periodically screens user passwords to identify any that are easily "guessable", and may require you to change yours to something more secure. This is for your protection and the protection of University systems.
- Change your password on a regular basis. At a minimum, you should change it every six months.
- Never share your passwords with anyone. University policies prohibit sharing passwords, and may hold you responsible for any misuse of University resources accessed with your account and password. If you think someone may know your password, change it immediately.
- Don't write down passwords. If you must keep a written copy, lock it up.

GUIDELINES FOR CHOOSING A PASSWORD
- Passwords should be at least 7 characters, but more is better.
- Passwords should contain a mix of upper and lowercase letters, a mix of letters and numbers, or a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers.
- Intersperse punctuation marks or symbols (#, $, %, etc). Do not use blank spaces.
- Passwords should be something you can easily remember, yet hard for someone else to guess. For example, a phrase like "Bob and Susan got married March 3, 1998" could become BaSgm3398.
- Passwords cannot be all numbers, and cannot contain alphabetic or numerical sequences (i.e., “cde” or “345”).
- Passwords cannot be a proper name or a word recognized by any dictionary. That includes words from another language. Do not add numbers to the beginning or end of words or proper names. Do not use your initials preceded or followed by numbers.
