ITS provides staff, faculty, and students with a University email account. UM-Dearborn supports an email system, which allows you to access it from anywhere in the world. For your desktop PC on or off campus, we recommend you use Mozilla Mail. It provides the best security, features and options. When travelling, you can access your email on the Internet with UM-D’s Webmail. Webmail provides other functions, such as task lists and calendaring.

Logging Into Email
You will need a uniqname and Dearborn password to access your email, whether on campus or from another location. The ITS Accounts Office can provide you with more information on how to set up and access your email from home.
Email Address
Your email address at UM-Dearborn is (uniqname)@umd.umich.edu. ITS recommends using this address, which will deliver messages directly to your mailbox. You also have the option of using (uniqname)@umich.edu as your address. This will cause your messages to be sent to Ann Arbor's server, and then forwarded to your mailbox in Dearborn. Problems in Ann Arbor may result in your mail being delayed.
NOTE : This is your official University email address, which will be used by schools and departments to send you important information. You are responsible for reading official notifications that come to your email account from the University. Even if you use another email account, check this one regularly! You can forward University email to a personal email account. For instructions, check out forwarding your email.
You can search for other UMD addresses using the online directory. You can also get address information for faculty, staff and students at the Ann Arbor and Flint campuses by using the University of Michigan Online Directory (UMOD). In addition, both Mozilla and Webmail offer lookups for University addresses.
On Campus
ITS includes and supports Mozilla Mail in its standard software image, which can be loaded on office desktop PCs. Mozilla Mail is also included in the software image used in ITS computer labs.
From Home
ITS strongly recommends that you download the latest version of Mozilla for your home computer, and utilize it to get your University email. It is the most efficient and effective way for you to handle your email from home. Instructions on setting up your email access are available at Remote Email Access. The ITS Accounts Office can also assist you with any questions or problems that you encounter.
On the road
UM-Dearborn supports an IMAP email system, which means that you can access your email when you are traveling away from home and campus by using Webmail on the Internet.
Mailbox Storage
UM-Dearborn provides extensive storage for your messages and attachments. In addition, new email features are being implemented so that you can easily check the size of your mailbox and see the percentage remaining in your quota. But it is still important for you to regularly clear out unwanted mail.
Students – You can use up to 200 Mb for storing your email and attachments. That will let you keep thousands of messages and documents.
Employees – You have 2 Gig available for storing email messages and large file attachments.
Empty Your Trash
Most of us delete many unwanted messages every day. In most applications, those are simply moved from your Inbox to your Trash folder, where they pile up until you “empty” the trash. If you don’t clear them out, they can accumulate until they fill your mailbox quota. Don’t use your Trash folder as a filing cabinet for messages you want to keep. In fact, many email programs will automatically empty Trash folders, which might cause some unwanted results.
