Networking
ITS manages the campus network, including high-speed access to the Internet. We manage the infrastructure, which includes building wiring, fiber runs between buildings, and active electronics located in each building on campus. ITS supports campus routers, and works with other departments in Ann Arbor to integrate the University network. We utilize network monitoring software to help identify and resolve problems that may occur.
Here on campus, ITS provides wired connections for computers in classrooms, offices, labs, and the library. We also support the wireless network, which you can use from virtually anywhere to surf the Internet, check email, or login to University systems. Students can use the network on campus and off to access and use many resources, perform research, and take online courses through distance learning. Faculty can use CTools to share information online and teach courses.
ITS also provides the campus with network services such as DNS (Domain Name System), which translates the more recognizable Internet domain names [i.e. www.umd.mich.edu] into numeric Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. For assistance changing or obtaining additional IP addresses, please contact the ITS Help Desk.
ITS has developed network attachment standards and security standards to help ensure the security and integrity of all systems. These standards are consistent with University and industry recommended policies.
Internet2
UM-Dearborn is privileged to be part of Internet2, a consortium of universities, industry and government working in partnership to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies. I2 offers the next generation of high speed Internet for research and delivery of academic programs.
